Our identity
The Story of Our Logo
Our logo was created to encompass our purpose, mission, and tools that are The Gateway Science Project.
In our beetle-ish looking logo we have the atom (head) that is symbolic of the quantum world — the study of nature at its most basic elements. The legs are strands of DNA, that represents Life on our planet. In the six discs, we have the symbolism of the cosmos. At the top we have Jupiter. The next 4 discs, the Galilean moons — Ganymede, Io, Europa, and Callisto — first coined the Medici Stars by Galileo in honor of his patron, the Medici. The bottom blue disc is Earth, Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot, where Galileo first observed Jupiter and its moons. All of it wrapped in the shape of an insect. My contribution to the story.

I have always been interested in the story of how we got here. One of my favorite eras is the awakening of mankind from the dark ages into the Renaissance — the period where man woke from the superstitions of ignorance and began to test the status quo, where the pursuit of knowledge and the making of art became the same impulse.
Much of what happened in the Renaissance can be traced to one family, the Medici. The Medici were many things, not all of them good. But it was the Medici, more than any other, who began the patronage of genius. Donatello. Brunelleschi. Michelangelo. Botticelli. All the way up to Galileo.
That era produced Galileo. It was Galileo who turned the new telescope on the night sky and published what he saw. It was Galileo who opened our eyes to our place in the Cosmos. This logo is my tribute to a family and movement that gave rise to the story of science, our story.
