Special exhibit
The Dan Capps Collection
Dan Capps of Madison, Wisconsin, is one of the foremost private insect collectors in the world — a collection once featured at Disney’s Epcot Center, now rebuilt inside virtual reality so you can walk it up close.
Dan caught his first insect in 1958, at eight years old, and never really stopped. Over six decades that boyhood habit grew into one of the largest private insect collections on Earth, gathered on expeditions to Australia, Cuba, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica, and beyond. Some specimens date back to 1872; more than a few are now extinct.
Ripley’s Believe It or Not! featured Dan for spitting a cricket more than 30 feet. He has his own Trivial Pursuit question card, and holds a Guinness World Record (set on national TV in 1998) for cricket spitting — 32 feet and half an inch.
