THE ARACHNIDS:

8 legs, 2 body parts (cephelothorax and abdomen)

Arachne was name of a girl in ancient greek mythology who beat the goddess Athena in a weaving contest….. so Athena changed her into a spider.  Arachnids originate from a marine, scorpion-like ancestor that originated during the Silurian Period (435 – 400 million years ago).  They were huge and nearly a meter in length.  This ancestor died out around 250 million years ago but today’s arachnids have become highly successful on land.  Arachnids include spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites and a few others.  The body of an Arachnid is divided into a cephalothorax (head and thorax fused) and abdomen.  They have four pairs of jointed legs all attached to the cephalothorax and no antennae. Arachnids are the group of arthropods that is most often confused with insects.
