A.K.A “The worlds deadliest insect!” However impressive, this title is undeserved to the African Assassin Bug. True, it is a voracious predator and also true that it has a venom very similar to cobra venom which it can use to knock down it’s prey from up to 12” away. True again that a California zookeeper was once almost killed while cleaning the cage of these insects. They are far from being the world’s deadliest insect. They are more shy than anything and not the danger to man that their reputation would have you believe. They are brightly colored yellow with black and are known best for the two white eye spots on their back. Assassin bugs are quite common everywhere and always considered a beneficial insect. Local assassin bugs are a great find, easy to keep and would make a great addition to your own creepy crawly zoo. P.S. The world’s deadliest insect is really none other than the common mosquito. It is responsible for more deaths in human history than all wars combined. Second would probably be the teeny-tiny little flea. It is responsible for 3 world wide outbreaks of plague and responsible for millions upon millions of deaths. |
